For this week’s assignment I will do this piece, the title is in French and I think it means the conversation by the translation they had on the page; which the females in the painting look like they are day dreaming about something rather than talking about anything. This painting looks a tad abstract to me, the lady in black who seems to be wrapping her deformed arms around her knees, but then again I could’ve just now thought something that is true, or it could be the lack of line work. I’m drawn to the lady in black because it seems that she is looking at me while the lady in purple would be looking at someone standing a few feet to the left.
This piece is stylized and not idealized because of the shape of the female’s faces, they don’t look too pretty being drawn, but I can see that the subjects were meant to look beautiful. I feel the color in the room adds emphasis to the idea that they are beautiful women and from what they are wearing looks to be clothes that were purchased with a lot of money and considered stylish.
The subject and content of this painting to me does not seem to add up, the piece is named the conversation yet the women aren’t talking. As said before I feel they are day dreaming, of course the looks on their faces could also be the result of them being in deep thought after a conversation. I feel maybe the artist should have named this piece “after the conversation” versus “the conversation”.
Overall this piece I was drawn to because I can relate to it, I remember sitting down with a close friend or family member talking and afterwards we would just sit there in deep thought about whatever we were discussing, or me just day dreaming about the cute boy I saw that day or what could’ve happen at school earlier. I feel if a different medium was used then it would look allot better with the detail in the chairs and background, but I still liked the painting and enjoyed doing this part of the assignment.
After doing some research and reading the feedback from my instructor, I learned that Matisse was a 20th century painter, with the idea that color isn’t what it seems; or doesn’t have to be, from what I understand. Looking at this piece is a great example of that, the lady in black doesn’t go with anything else in the painting, the greens, yellows and reds and purples are in different places in the painting, why did Matisse decide to give her a black dress, when there is no other black in the painting besides some the line work that is visible, I believe that he did this to bring more attention to her, also because it looks like she is looking at the viewer.
