Title: Violetta SlideShow
By: E.V Day Violetta
Date: 2009
Medium: Stainless steel rings and hardware
After examining this piece, I feel that the main principle of design this piece is highlighting is emphasis. Emphasis is being used here to create levels of contrast, balance, unity, as well as levels of movement.
The sheer, almost transparent material suspended by the barrier of strings creates a ghostly, ethereal sight. The shiny wires catch both the natural light of the room and reflects the artificial show lights, highlighting the many contours and shapes of the dress.
Although the top and the bottom have been separated, the overall picture still depicts unity and proportion. The deconstruction of the top portion and the skirt of the dress further the effect that the dress is alive. Looking at the sharp, slimming shape of the waist makes me imagine the negative shape in-between them is to be filled with the shape of a body, creating an possessed feel.
The solid top gives form, equating strength while the sheer bottom radiates delicateness about it. The way is dress is suspended, underneath the bright light, layer by lofty layer, while halting physical movement, still makes me imagine as if there was a breeze flowing through the material of the skirt. The stringed barrier creates an enchanted ghostly aura and gives the piece multiple effects. From far away, you don’t see the strings, you only see the light underneath, giving the dress the magical effect that it is floating. But from even up close, and you see the strings, you wouldn’t be disappointed. This floating effect would be further enhanced at night. The caption described the piece as the web of strings becoming a cage of the dress, but I look at this piece and feel that the barrier is a power being projected from the dress, erected to shield it from the elements and sustain it being frozen in time.
Concerning the medium used in this piece, I don’t think of other medium could’ve done a better job than what is used in this piece. The idea of it was well thought out and a breath taker.
